I was born in 1945 in my grandparent’s home on the outskirts of a Hertfordshire town and grew up where laughter was the order of the day. I trained as a Design Engineer in London in the 60’s and worked in England until 1970 when I moved, with my wife, to Australia. Whilst living there I began concentrating on Pencil Drawings, creating a variety of styles from contemporary to the more traditional. We now live in the small Market town of Harleston, and having spent 40 years as an Engineer, I now work from home as a full-time artist and my work has been sold both here in the U.K. and overseas. My inspiration comes from a mixture of moments and imagination and is nearly always accompanied by the quirky and quizzical which I seem to have inherited from my early days. The final results are often a surprise as the characters and settings seem to take on a life of their own, which for me is the adventure and pleasure of drawing. My choice of composition can vary from the purely inspirational to the procedural, which requires the development of composite ideas and the use of preliminary sketches. In both cases my style demands a certain precision and a necessary regard to detail and although painstaking, is not without its freedoms. At the commencement of a piece, I begin by covering the whole area of the composition with light but graduated tones in order to establish a ‘total feel’ from the outset. The piece is then progressed and completed by the applying multiple layers of added tone, which determine the light, depth, focus and detail. I like to feel the uncomplicated honesty of pencil and its confinement within the merging shadows of form and tone make it well able to stand in its own right in the world of art today.
